EXTREME HEAT COLLOQUIUM
EXTREME HEAT COLLOQUIUM
Date: Thursday 3rd October 2024
Venue: Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria
Extreme heat is a notable and growing climate hazard, which negatively affects human health, housing and critical infrastructure, especially in urban communities. There is higher vulnerability among elderly, children, outdoor workers, and within underserved, low-income communities. An inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach is needed to assess the state of knowledge, better understand risks, identify community needs, data gaps and research priorities. These are needed to inform design, planning, community awareness and adaptation, and public health efforts. This colloquium seeks to facilitate interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dialogues on extreme heat across the climate science, built environment, social science and humanities, public health, finance disciplines as well as community, public and private sector actors. It hopes to identify cross-sectoral solutions that can build societal resilience to future extreme heat, from the local to the national level.
Colloquium features:
- Keynote talks: big-picture overview, highlighting research gaps and open questions.
- Presentations of completed/ongoing research and case studies from scholars across disciplines.
- Panel discussion and networking session.
Colloquium deliverables:
- Collection of presentations which should be published in an edited book/journal special issue.
- Materials and networking for cross-disciplinary research, pedagogy, policy actions and public awareness. A community of experts and stakeholders should ensue.
